World Smile Day, What is it all about?
In 1963, Harvey Ball (a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts) created the smiley face, which has since gone on to be recognised around the world for good will and cheer.
Over the years, Harvey Ball became concerned that the Smiley Face was been over-commercialised. So he declared that the first Friday in October every year will be World Smile Day, "He thought that we, all of us, should devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts throughout the world. The smiley face knows no politics, no geography and no religion." (World Smile Day Website)
